Tiptoe Down the Hall I go

Remember college? When you’d live on the 7th floor and your bang buddy would live on the 4th floor? It’s 3am, everyone is getting back to the dorm (or this was also quite prevalent in certain college’s apartment complexes, as well) from the bars, you change into your ever-so-sexy lingerie (err – his frat shirt) and you go to poundtown. Then you either would go back to your dorm room (or apartment) that very night—what a commute!—or the next morning. Clean. Done. BAM.

Well, in the lovely city of Manhattan there are those buildings that tend to feel like dorms. Dorms on steroids! You know the ones I’m referring to (ehem, those in the 30s on the east side...)

Many times when you live in one of these buildings, you know many other people that also live in them. This can be fun. Great actually! Lazy Sundays...you SHOULD be Sunday Funday-ing, but I understand sometimes LAZY Sundays are necessary...are easy when you can meet your friend on the couch for movies and wine. Or random nights in or even “pre- games”...all made so easy when living in the same building as other people you know.

What can be somewhat of a tricky (or wonderful) situation is when you live in the same apartment building as your bang buddy. I know similar situations happened in college all the time, but things are DIFFERENT post-college. Everyone is fooling around in college. It’s like part of the “what you must do in college” handbook. However, in your mid 20s it’s different. Things can get quite awkward if you “shit where you eat.” Excuse the gross phrase, but it was necessary.

So, how do you handle living in the same building as the guy or girl you’re currently sleeping with or hooking up with or swooning over – WHATEVER? Well, I’ll tell you what you shouldn’t do; you shouldn’t start staking out the lobby around 3am every Friday and Saturday night. Hello, crazy!!

What you MUST do is remain calm, cool, and collected. You, by no means, are allowed to get “heady” and start questioning things. You two are in the exact same situation as you were prior to living in each other’s building. You are hooking up, you are sleeping together, you are going on dates, you are nothing – whatever the case may be.

You can’t start messaging this person MORE because of them being in your building (Well, girls – you can’t. Boys need to initiate or they’ll just be annoyed, push you off, and then that’ll be a fun awkward encounter when you both happen to be checking your mail at the same time.)

You can’t “assume” you’re going to hook up every single weekend night now that you’re living under the same roof. There are times HE may come home with some girl or SHE may bring someone else home. If you witness this, do not freak out, and do not carry on drunk in the lobby; go to your apartment and vent to your friends.
